The quality of pictures you can produce with desktop printers today is nearly unbelievable. Just 25 years ago the received wisdom was that no low-cost, easy-to-use “home printer” would ever be able to match traditional, lab-produced photo prints. Today, some $75 photo printers can make you think you are looking at 5-by-7’s coming straight from the lab.

More important that specific printer makes and models, is the number of ink colors in the unit. Standard inkjets have four, the basic cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK) that yield what is called “process color.” Most of the color spectrum can be replicated, except there is a decided weakness in metallic hues and bright colors. This is why better printers will have 6-ink or even 8-ink color, adding light cyan, light magenta and/orange. Generally speaking, the more colors, the better.

Media matters
Before looking at specific printer makes or models, there are some things you should consider. You need to decide what level (casual home user, talented amateur or professional) and quality of prints you want from your printer, and then need to factor in the cost of ink cartridges, special papers and any other consumables (cleaners, etc.). You don’t have to print from a computer, either, since there are plenty of good PC-free, stand-alone inkjets on the market.

After ink, paper makes the biggest difference in the printing of quality photos. Plain copy-machine paper produces the worst results, while the high-gloss photo papers can yield stunningly realistic prints. Of course, the more photographically oriented the paper is, the higher the cost is going to be. In addition, ink cartridges have a wide range of prices, and some printers will not function well unless you use the recommended brand (the printer manufacturer’s, usually). Be aware of these prices, and these possible limitations, when shopping for a photo printer.

The eyes have it
When you are looking for a photo printer, you need to do just that – go look at the printers in a store. After you have done some research and read a few buyer guides, test a number of recommended models and compare the results for yourself. Although printer reviews and consumer anecdotes can help you, a good photo print (like beauty anywhere) is in the eye of the beholder. Of course, if you don’t trust your own eyes, bring along another pair.

Be careful about terminology, too. Although a printer may be called a “photo printer” while another is not, all inkjets use the same basic technology. The special features are in the print heads and the drop (or “droplet”) size. The better the print heads, and the smaller the droplets, the better the image, assuming good paper and a good image to print.

Dedicated choices
Specialized photo printers are very good at printing photos but may not be as good for basic word processing or text-and-graphics layouts. Conversely, makers of “all-in-one” printers, with scanning and faxing and even copying functions, could not keep the prices in line if they made the device with photo-level print heads and droplet size. Frankly, if printing photos is important to you, you should have a designated photo printer and use it exclusively for that purpose.

PC-free printers are exactly what their name says, namely, printers that operate without a computer connected and only print photos. There are various models available at different price points that will print images directly from a flash-memory card or the digital camera itself. For the serious photo buff, however, this leaves Photoshop and Corel and other software out of the loop, but a PC-free printer could be appropriate for people who don’t have (or want) a computer.

Many good models
Like most of high-tech, printer prices are constantly changing, and usually in the right way. That is, the devices keep getting better, smarter, faster – and cheaper. Now, “cheap” is not the word you want to keep in mind when shopping for something to which you will entrust you dearest memories. If you are serious about good photography and good photographic prints, you will not be satisfied with the sale printer of the week at Wal-Mart.

On the other hand, you don’t have to pay $1000 (or five times that) to get a pro-level inkjet, because $300-500 can get you a “prosumer” model that many people will swear produces photo-lab quality prints. Major manufacturers that have consistently produced a range of quality photo printers include Canon, Epson and Hewlett-Packard. Specifically, look at the Canon Pixma line, the Epson Stylus series and the H-P Photosmart models.

Prices start in the low hundreds, and pro models can cost, as previously mentioned, many thousands. Get the best one you can afford, based on your real (not imagined) needs and your anticipated use.

Refer to the manufacturer websites to check out specs on various models then compare the physical products at office stores. Finally, put your price comparison widgets or websites to work for you and make your best deal. A great printer for great photos at a great price? Picture that!

How to Decide Whether to Rent Lease or Buy a Computer

When most people hear talk about “buying” versus “leasing” they usually think of a car purchase or some sort of real estate agreement. However, small business owners have to think about, and decide between, these terms all the time, and relating to almost everything the work with – buildings, vehicles, equipment for the factory floors and computers for the office.

Considering the amazingly low prices for today’s powerful personal computers, one’s first instinct may be to buy a computer without even thinking about it. Of course, you know you are going to use the machine for several years (computers stay reasonable current for the first year, then start aging rapidly) and the fact that you own it can be somewhat reassuring. There are several factors, however, that should prompt you to consider leasing a computer or perhaps even renting one, as opposed to making that impulse buy.

One is never enough

Leasing computers can help a company avoid plunking down so much capital up front. Leasing makes sense when there is a need for an especially powerful, customized, expensive unit, or a number of computers for different departments. This decision can turn the computers into an operating expense, an especially helpful thing if the company is just getting started. Another advantage is that, when directly leasing from a vendor or a manufacturer, businesses do not need to obtain loans from banks – and deal with all the red tape and paperwork that comes with it.

From a financial planning standpoint, leasing makes sense for many businesses, and if the conditions are right, so does renting. Renting computer equipment can be just as good as leasing in the sense that you can always upgrade, fairly painlessly, to the highest quality, greatest power and newest software available. The company renting you the equipment makes their money also assumes the responsibility for repairs and maintenance. Although some leases may differ on service contracts and onsite repairs, if you rent the equipment the owner is still responsible for the technical difficulties occurring throughout the duration of your contract. That is what paying rent is all about. You pay to have predictable functionality and a working asset at all times.

Other factors

If you really want to know what the best course of action is for you business or your personal needs, then do the usual research. There are always plenty of websites that can provide all the facts, crunch all the various numbers and make it worth your while to investigate. Steer clear of the “rent-to-own” dealers, of course, as the offer of “no money down and no credit check” is insufficient to overcome the price you pay down the road. With rent-to-own, it is always bigger than you expect.

If you have special enhancements on your one of your present computers – special internal plug-in cards (PCI), upgraded graphics (AGP) – and have “maxed out” your RAM, you may wish to reconsider replacing that particular unit. It may be difficult to find a lease deal that will allow you to upgrade and replace computer components, and your rental dealer will probably not like that idea much. If you do need customizing, it is best to own your own equipment.

Ask the accountant

If you run a medium-sized or larger firm, and have various departments with various needs, you will have to do a study to determine the actual, real-world, real-time needs of the various personnel. Ask your department managers to research the matter, and then be specific about what they need in the PCs for their respective departments. You can then have your accountant look at the various options – buy, lease, rent – and calculate what mix of these will work for the company as a whole.

It may be that you need to lease new Macintosh computers for your art department, and on an annual basis to stay up with the “state of the art.” Secretaries, word processors and accounting personnel can easily run new, powerful Windows software on lower-cost PCs, and not need upgrading for several years at a time. Purchasing low-end computers would seem a workable solution. If you have engineers and others needing some real computational horsepower, of course, you may even need to leave the realm of PCs and step up to a mini-computer from IBM or Hewlett-Packard. (PCs are actually defined as “microcomputers.”)

The bottom line is different for different companies and their different needs. Often a mix of these methods – buying, leasing and renting – is the ultimate result of a careful study. If you have a small company with just a few employees, of course, your decision should be a bit easier to make. The fact is, with prices so low for power so great, computers are one of the less expensive expenses for companies today, and contribute to the business out of all proportion to their small cost. Whatever strategy you come up with, it should be an affordable one.

Deciding Between A Custom-Built And Pre-Built Computer

In the Computer Stone Age – say, 25 years ago or so – just about every computer was custom built. Before the big computer makers turned PCs into commodities, you would order a certain motherboard, a certain CPU, a certain amount of RAM (at up to $400 a megabyte in the mid-1980s) and even specify the wattage of your power supply. Then the marketing people took over from the entrepreneurs, and pre-built computers started to rule the roost.

Today, computer components have become so powerful and so relatively inexpensive, and manufacturing processes so sophisticated, that it is a simple thing for the “majors” – Dell, H-P/Compaq, IBM, Gateway – to offer custom-built computers as well as pre-built ones. How do you decide what is best for you?

What’cha gonna do?
The most important consideration is what you are going to use your computer for. If you are going to do some word processing, web surfing, music playing and a little photo work, an off-the-shelf pre-built computer is the way to go. Unless you have some high-octane processing to do, such as high-end game playing or professional video editing, you don’t need anything more than a company’s entry-level model. You could probably even make do with two- to five-year-old technology, even, if you don’t mind buying used or refurbished PCs without warranties.

On the other hand, if you are going to make more demands on your computer, you need more horsepower. For gamers, it is not just the CPU (Central Processing Unit, or “main brain”) strength that matters. Today’s computer games also require a great deal of graphics processing, meaning more powerful graphics subsystems. The lower-end computers have less powerful graphics chips “integrated” on the main circuit board, while higher-end machines have separate graphics “cards.”

More money vs. more smarts

If you need more power, for games or video or what-have-you, and don’t really know the technical side of things, get a more expensive computer. The CPU and the graphics subsystems are the first things that computer makers upgrade as they fill out their lines. If you do know the tech stuff, then you are the kind of person who can do well in the custom-built computer market.

Remember that “custom-built” can mean a few different things. For Dell and HP, for example, it means starting out with a basic, “barebones” setup to which you add your choice of standard or upgraded components. However, there are a thousand and one (a million and one?) PC storefronts around the country that offer “custom-built” computers, and this time the term involves real customizing. With this kind of dealer, you can “spec” everything from the computer case and power supply to the amount of RAM, the kind of CPU, the size of the hard drive and the sophistication of the DVD burner. Every choice is yours.

Final considerations

Don’t spend money that you don’t have to spend. Spend only what you need to get the job done, unless you know you will doing other, more power-hungry operations in the near future. In that case, spend what you need to and get the capability that will hold you for at least a year. Whether you go with a pre- or custom-built computer is not as important as what you need to do, and how to do it cost-effectively. The fact is that a solid, capable, new computer can cost as little as $200-300 now, and will do all the basics like web surfing, photo editing and music/video playing right out of the box.

Remember, too, that it is not just PCs that can be approached this way, as Apple offers custom-built computers and various outfitting options for its new Macintosh models, as well. Dealers in used and refurbished computers have also made room for the Mac models, which are now powered by Intel CPUs and share many components with the rest of the PC world now, a real change from the “founding era” of the 1970s and 1980s.

So, for you “power users” out there, whether you want a PC or a Mac, you can have it the way you want it with just a little effort. And you folks who make fewer demands on your computers will find a great selection of pre-built computers that will do everything you want for precious little coin. But now that you’ve learned a little more about how it all works, deciding between a custom-built and pre-built computer might not be quite as easy as before!

If You are Thinking of Buying Penny Stocks, Here are a Few Things You Should Know

Perhaps you are new to the idea of buying stacks and shares, have a few extra dollars, and are looking to see how to make your money grow. The price of shares for companies like Microsoft is too high for your budget, so what can you invest in?

Penny stocks could be what you want. They are cheap shares, sold at between $1 and $5. You won’t find them listed in the S&P 500 or NASDAQ, so how do you know what companies are selling shares at these prices? If you go to the reference section of your local library you will find a copy of Walker’s Manual of Penny Stocks. This manual lists 500 companies which sell share at these low prices. However, you cannot reasonably expect to get rich quick by buying these stocks. Some companies, such as &-Eleven began by being penny stock companies, so you can make money in this way, but it will take time and you have to do some research and have a little, or a lot, of luck.

You can buy these shares over the counter, on the OTC market. Prices are quoted in the OTC system for example on the OTC Bulletin Board or in the pink sheets. Before buying any penny shares, you should check that the companies are registered with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). One problem with buying these stocks is that the companies are too small to file their financial reports with the SEC, so sometimes the only information available is false. The fact that there is no reliable information and no minimum listing standards, are deterrents to buying this kind of stock.

However, you should do some research into the companies, for example, what exactly do they do? Do they make products or are they a service industry? Are they involved in manufacturing are they an environmentally friendly company? How viable is the product they make? Would you want to buy it, or do you think it would be popular?

The best thing to do would be to seek advice from a financial advisor before investing money in penny stocks. If you don’t particularly want to do that, the next best advice is to only invest what you can afford to lose. This is true of whatever company you invest in. There is no guarantee that shares will increase in value, and every chance that they will in fact depreciate, so think before you invest.

Dealing With Hot Notebook

If you’ve read our article on the causes and potentially devastating effects of notebook heat, you know that thanks to external temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit, some notebooks can feel more like portable grills than portable computers. While inadequate heat dissipation is the manufacturer’s fault, users aren’t helpless. If your notebook is getting a bit too warm for comfort, there are several settings you can change to make it cooler. While none of these is guaranteed to transform a 110-degree palm rest into an ice machine, the changes can help. A poorly cooled notebook is extremely uncomfortable to use. In fact, though heat-related injuries are rare, some systems actually carry warning labels. For example, many current Toshiba Satellites have stickers affixed to their bottoms which state: “Caution: PC base can become hot! Avoid prolonged contact to prevent heat injury to skin.”

Some of the tips below involve editing the advanced power settings in Windows Power Options. To access the advanced power settings:

   1. Open Power Options either by clicking the icon in the All Control Panel Options menu or by double-clicking the Windows battery icon in your system tray.
   2. Select Change plan settings next to the power plan you are using (balanced, power saver, etc).
   3. Select Change advanced power settings.

The amount of heat given off by a component will be the same no matter what notebook it’s used in. The differences from notebook to notebook, however, are based on air and heat flow within the system, the amount of power consumed, and notebook chassis material. While notebooks made from sleek-looking aluminum and other metals are increasingly popular, such systems tend to feel hotter. That’s because of differences in thermo-mechanical properties of the materials, according to Rajiv Mongia, principal engineer for Intel’s Thermal Technologies team. For example, an aluminum chassis will feel hotter to the touch than a plastic chassis of the same temperature.

1: Enable Active Cooling
Make sure that, in the Windows power settings or in your notebook’s proprietary power management software, the highest level of cooling is enabled. The menu option for enabling active cooling varies from notebook to notebook, but in some cases, the option will actually say “active cooling” and in others the option will say “maximum performance” as opposed to “maximum battery life.”

2: Enable all power saving options for the CPU, graphics, wireless card, etc.
It’s simple physics. The more power your notebook consumes, the more heat it generates. If you’re willing to sacrifice a little performance by running your notebook’s key components in low power modes, it will generate less heat.

To use less juice and generate less heat, we recommend changing the advanced settings in the Windows power manager’s, both for “on battery” and “plugged in” states:

    * Wireless Adapter Settings: Maximum Power Saving
    * Link State Power Management: Maximum power savings
    * Graphics Power Plan: Maximum Battery life or the equivalent, based on what video card your notebook has installed.
    * PCI Express -> Link State Power Management: Maximum power savings
    * Processor power management -> Maximum processor state: Set to a lower percentage such as 30-percent.

3: Unplug Your Notebook
Some notebooks are manufactured to consume more power (and generate more heat) when plugged in than on battery alone, even with the exact same power settings enabled. After lowering all your power saving settings (as in tip #2), you may want to try pulling the plug.

4: Put the notebook on a table or desk
Many of a notebook’s vents are located on the bottom of its chassis, so when you put the notebook on your lap, you’re partially obstructing those vents. And if you put the notebook on a on a fabric surface like a bed or couch, you’re really choking its airflow. If the bottom of your notebook is getting really hot, consider putting it on a table or using a lapdesk that sits between you and the notebook.

5: Using a cooling pad
Some might say that this is the most obvious tip and should appear first, but cooling pads add bulk to your notebook bag and make your system less portable. So while cooling pads like the great Cooler Master Notepal U2 may be the only choice for a burning hot notebook, they shouldn’t always be your first.
