31st of October is the day when Halloween is celebrated. Halloween – this is an old tradition and this tradition has deep roots. Why Halloween is so popular and is becoming even more popular and popular? People begin to prepare some weeks and months before this holiday. So, what are the reasons of this popularity?
First of all, Halloween is not a night of fear, but a night of overcoming this very fear. Facing these fears and horrors and in a comic way adults as well as children overcome these scares and begin to look at the things from the other side.
Halloween images are various: from witches, devils, ghosts to mermaids and wood goblins…
Masquerade as an indispensable Halloween’s attribute symbolizes “laughter over fear”. For example, if you disguise yourself in a vampire costume but not being a vampire you just laugh on vampire’s pathos… consequently the fear disappears and you are not afraid of vampires anymore- you are free of any fears.
Some people even do not know and do not remember the history of Halloween but they do know for sure that it is impossible to meet Halloween without any fancy dress. Nowadays this holiday turns into a secular, playing, and amusing but not scaring one– and this is a wonderful tendency! Better to play in fear than to be dependable on this fear. This holiday helps people to conquer theirs fears.
Now you see that Halloween is one of the favorite holidays among adults and children. Entertaining and warm Halloween parties are always welcomed for all ages and genders. You just must decide on what masquerade costume and mask to put on in order to be the most horrible and scare character of your party.
This is a psychological side of Halloween holiday. Now let us examine the historical side and see the line of this custom from the past.
Halloween is connected with Christian All Saints Day and the Pagan festival among Celts-Samhain. This Samhain represented the end of the summer and New Year beginning. I must say, that Celts lived much simpler than we live now, and the minute hand did not bother their minds much as they did not have clocks at all. They divided year into two seasons: winter and bright summer, which ended right at the end of October when it begin to get dark earlier than in summer.
They say that exactly this night – on the joint of two seasons the doors into the other world open and…the spirits of the dead along with the evil spirits and fairies get the access into our human’s world as well as use this entrance. In order to frighten them off, people must carry with themselves the candles inside a scaring carved pumpkin. Also people placed such carved pumpkins with frightening or comic faces on the homes` doorstep. Now you know the roots of Halloween.
If this old tradition lives in people’s minds, hearts and souls then this magnificent and fantastic holiday is always young, as it gathers the old and the youth together and connects the past through the present to the future, playing a great role for the succession of the generations.
